Appleby Magna v Kegworth Town Cricket Club Under 15's B on Wed 16 May 2012 at 18:00
Kegworth Town Cricket Club Won By 28 runs
Match report
A quite brilliant performance.
Kegworth won the toss and elected to bat.
The game was played on artificial, and batting was difficult because the ball kept very low. At 19 for 4 after 5 overs it was clear that we were going to struggle to set a competitive score.
The middle order then set about batting out our full 20 overs, and a big well done to George Jones, Sam Wildgust, Lewis Griggs and Myles Faulks for playing sensibly and taking 1s and 2s where available. Then Ant Berridge and Max Lawson batted the last 2 overs before Ant was rather harshly adjudged run out off the last ball of the innings.
To illustrate how tough batting was, we didn't hit a single boundary in our innings, and Lewis was our top scorer with 10 off 21 balls.
At the change of innings we talked about how low the ball had kept, and set a plan to bowl Lewis and Tim to try and get a few wickets, before letting Myles and Ant have a bowl and try to create problems with some spin. It couldn't have worked any better.
Lewis opened the innings with a maiden over, and Tim then bowled a double wicket maiden. Tim then bowled their number 5 in his second over to have Appleby 6 for 3 off 4 overs. Tim and Lewis bowled their 4 overs each to have Appleby at 29 for 3 off 8 overs, so the match was finely poised thanks to some incredibly accurate bowling and tenacious fielding by all 11 Kegworth players.
This brought Ant and Myles into the attack, and the next 6.2 overs were some of the best bowling and fielding I have ever seen by a Kegworth team as Appleby lost 7 wickets for 7 runs in 36 balls.
Appleby simply had no answer to the two spinners. When they tried to defend they were beaten, and edged the ball. When they tried to hit out the ball flew over fielders, off the edge and ultimately provided 3 catches for Tim. Then when they tried to sneak a single two direct hits from Myles and George saw them lose more wickets.
With such a young team with 6 u14s, 2 U13s, 1 U12 and 2 U11s this was a privilege to watch. They should all be incredibly proud of themselves. Grinding out our innings to last 20 overs was a great example in application. Then the team spirit they showed in the field to put Appleby under pressure from ball 1 was quite brilliant. With 3 wickets and 3 catches and fabulous captaincy, Tim would have been man of the match in most matches. However, the award was shared between Myles and Ant for their incredible spell of bowling.
Champagne (or lemonade!) moment goes to Myles for bowling a guy round his legs, in a delivery reminiscent of Warne's delivery to Gatting.A miracle ball.
Finally, special thanks to Max Lawson for stepping in at the 11th hour and more than holding his own with bat and in the field playing 4 years outside his own age group.
We will play tougher teams this summer, and the plan may never go as perfectly again. For now, we will all bask in the glory of last nights performance, and we will worry about the next game in a few days time!
