Kegworth Town Cricket Club Under 15's B v Shepshed Town on Wed 08 Jun 2011 at 18:00
Kegworth Town Cricket Club Won by 2 runs
Match report
A wonderful first win of the season for the U15B's. Richly deserved after some great performances in the cup, capped by this stunning team effort that left everyone watching with shredded nerves and in need of a drink!
If you left after the first 9 overs of our innings and then were told later that we had won the game you would not have believed it, it could not have been possible. That is what makes cricket the wonderful sport that it is.
Shepshed won the toss, and put Kegworth into bat under a dark brooding sky. Wickets fell regularly until after 9 overs we had lost Nic (4), Alex (1), George (12), Sam O (0) and Jacob (0), leaving our innings decimated on 31 for 5.Surely from here we would be lucky to get 50 or 60?
Enter Seb, Sam Wildgust and Owen Knock Knock Barker, who proceeded to rip up the script and race us to a formidable total of 115 for 6 off our 20 overs, scoring 76 runs off 11 overs.
Seb should have been stumped off the first two balls that he faced and did he make Shepshed pay! He got away with a few more as well, whilst bludgeoning 8 fours and a six on his way to 51 not out off 36 balls, his 51 off just 17 scoring shots!! No bowler was safe, and the Shepshed fielders couldn't stop the ball as it was hammered to every part of the ground. Most impressive of all was the 6 he pulled through the trees onto Nottingham Road. Simply stunning.
At the other end from Seb, Sam Wildgust quietly went about his business scoring 6 runs off 17 balls, and Sam deserves a lot of credit for getting himself off strike so Seb could continue to wreak havoc. When Seb retired Owen went in for the last 2.5 overs determined to reach double figures for the first time and earn the pizza promised by the team coach if he could do so. It was never in doubt!! Sam (6) and Owen (11 n.o.) plundered 18 runs from the last over to end the roller coaster innings on 115 for 6, Sam selflessly run out off the last ball of the innings going for a 2. An innings of contrasting fortune where 3 young men came of age with willow in hand.
Follow that!! And they did!!
Shepshed's innings started quietly and they proceeded to 13 in the 3rd over before Seb bowled a peach of a ball that moved away from the no. 2 batsman and caught the edge. Alex took the catch and was mobbed by his team mates in a celebration worthy of an Ashes winning catch!
At the other end George bowled 3 incredibly tight overs that put Shepshed well behind the asking rate on 28 for 1 off 6 overs. Even when the Shepshed batsmen managed to time a shot Seb, Tyler, Jacob, Vij, Nic and Ben were up to the task saving 4 runs on several occasions and restricting the batsmen to singles at best.
After 3 overs each, Seb and George took a break, bringing Sam Wildgust into the attack, with Vij and then Sam O'Neill. Sam W took a very sharp Caught and Bowled off his 3rd ball to dismiss the Shepshed opener.
The Shepshed number 3 played a superb innings from here, and some of the later bowlers, including Vij, Nic and Ben received some treatment from him. At the other end Sam Wildgust bowled his 4 overs taking 1 for 25, and Sam O'Neill bowled 4 overs 1 maiden taking 2 wickets for 9 runs. This really held up Shepshed and with 4 overs left they needed 33 to win. Sam's wickets were both catches, one he took himself, and the other was taken by Jacob with a brilliant catch at point, a position he has made his own in the last 2 years.
A team huddle after 16 overs to regroup and agree the strategy for the last 4 overs was inspired by Sam, great captaincy. Up stepped Ben, to bowl at their number 3 who clubbed 15 off his over to put the game on a knife edge. Even though Ben went for a lot of runs, a huge amount of credit is due to him at the age of 11 for having the character to volunteer to bowl. Such is the team spirit that we see from this bunch of lads that anyone of them would do the same.
Shepshed's number 3 made the game very close, but was forced to retire at the crucial time in the game on 53 n.o., with 3 overs left. This left Sam W, George and Seb bowled to bowl out the match with incredible accuracy, backed up by some brilliant fielding. Three certain 4's were hauled back inside the boundary to prevent Shepshed scoring a boundary in the last 17 balls of the game leaving them just 2 runs short of our total.
Everyone of us who watched the entire game were left with frayed nerves, and immense pride in our lads at the end, the smiles were broad and beaming. The lads showed tremendous spirit throughout, and their will to win was incredible, well done to each and everyone of them. They can all think of their own contribution in scoring runs, taking wickets, holding catches and fielding with bravery and skill that contributed to a brilliant victory that we will all remember with a smile for some time. We win and lose as a team, and this was a great example of that.
There were 11 Man of the Match performances, but the trophy was awarded to Owen for his brilliant little cameo at the end, plundering 11 in a last over that yielded 18 runs, earned him a pizza and gave us just enough in the final throes of a breathtaking match!
