Ashby Hastings v Kegworth Town Cricket Club Under 13's on Tue 24 May 2011 at 6.00pm
Kegworth Town Cricket Club Lost By 1 run

Match report A hard fought game between 2 great teams, played in good spirit on a cold night at Ashby's Bath Grounds. The league had already awarded us this game after Ashby pulled out of the original fixture at very short notice.

Ashby won the toss and decided to bat, and got off to a flying start with 3 fours off the first 3 balls of Lewis Griggs first over.

Lewis and Mitch Williams then slowed the pace and put the Ashby top order under huge pressure with accurate, full pitched bowling. In the 3rd over, with the score on 19, Josh Faulks took a good catch at mid-on off Lewis Griggs bowling to dismiss Ashby's no. 2 for 3 runs. At the other end Mitch was impossible to get away, bowling with great accuracy off his shorter run up. Whilst he didn't take a wicket, Mitch bowled his 4 overs for just 11 runs, and at the other end Lewis bowled their number 3 for just 1 run to have them 42 for 2 off the opening 8 overs. Lewis had mixed figures, with 2 for 31 off 4 overs. At the end of their spell, the Ashby opener retired on 25 not out after a fine knock.

This brought Josh and Tim into the attack for 3 overs a piece, and those 6 overs went for just 23, with Tim running out their number 4 off the last ball of Josh Faulks 3rd over to have Ashby at 66 for 3 off 14 overs.

This brought Tom Henson into the attack, bowling overs 15,17 and 19 and taking 3 for 14, all 3 wickets bowled. Mitch Moseley and Tim chipped in with an over each which only went for 3 runs and Josh bowled the last over taking 2 wickets, both bowled, to finish with figures of 4 overs 2 for 18.

Tim's 4 overs for 9 runs, Mitch Moseley's 1 over for 2 runs and the wicket taking of Josh and Tom really helped to keep Ashby down to a manageable score with only 25 runs off the last 10 overs. If there was a weakness it was in our fielding, with a couple of needless 4s conceded by poor fielding, and a few singles and 2s that should have been stopped. How crucial this was to prove to be!

So, at halfway, We had taken 8 Ashby wickets for 85 runs and had a very achievable target.

Batting then proved tough work for a few of the Kegworth team, in the face of some superb bowling and fielding by Ashby. We opened steadily, but had only reached 20 off the first 6 overs, which started to build some pressure. Sam Wildgust was out caught in the infield for 5 off 13 balls whilst Tim retired for a brisk 26 off 31 balls.

This left us with 2 new batsmen at the crease, and Harry was soon out for 5 off 7 balls, again caught. This left us 37 for 2 off 9. To inject some pace Mitch Williams and Alex Davies were moved up the order, and both were out for 0 off 1 and 7 balls respectively. leaving us 37 for 4 off 11 and chasing the game. On another day the move would have worked, and the acceleration that we so desperately needed would have come from these 2 batsmen, but today it wasn't our day.

Now we had Josh Faulks and Mitch Moseley at the wicket, both on 0. These 2 batsmen then built a tremendous partnership of 47 runs off 62 balls to nearly win a game that looked lost at the half way stage of our innings. Josh finished on 25 not out off 32 balls, and Mitch scored 17 not out from 30 balls.

To lose by 1 run was hard on the team, but they should not be disappointed, and certainly not look at their own performance in any way. We bowled superbly, we had some superb performances with the bat, and I think on another day we would have won this game. We win as a team, we lose as a team, and we continue to make progress. The bowling of Lewis, Tim, Josh, Mitch W and Tom followed by the batting of Tim, Josh and Mitch M were all match winning performances. Tom Waterfield's keeping was again exemplary, conceding just 4 byes. This was our first tough test and we handled it with great credit and spirit. I am sure this spirit, and the obvious talent that we have will take us to more victories during the rest of the summer.

There were Man of the Match perfomances all round, from Tim, Josh and Mitch Moseley especially for their all round performances, but teh award was made to Tom Henson for his 3 for 14 which pegged Ashby back to a very manageable total.
