Loughborough Carillon Old Boys v Kegworth Town Cricket Club Experimental (Under 12's) on Wed 21 Apr 2010 at 6pm
Kegworth Town Cricket Club Won By 2 runs

Match report A superb first match for the under 12's against a strong Old Boys team, several of whom had played against our Under 13's two days earlier.

3 of our lads are still Under 11 and 1 was playing his first ever match for Kegworth, so to come away with a win was fantastic.

Old Boys won the toss and elected to bat first on a warm night that soon turned into a chilly April evening.

Sam Wildgust and Mitch Williams got us off to a very good start with some fine bowling, restricting their openers to just 7 runs from 4 overs. Harry Lawson and Sam Trickett then kept up the pressure in the next four overs. Harry bowled a maiden over, followed by golden arm Sam Trickett taking a wicket with his very first ball. Harry and Sam then kept them to just 218 at the half way stage of their innings. Owen Hennessey and George Kenning then bowled four good overs, with Owen especially tight, conceding just 1 run off the bat with 3 wides, and George also conceding just 1 run off the bat and 5 wides. So with the last pair at the wicket, Old Boys had progressed to 236 for 1. Mitch Moseley bowled 2 of the last 4 with Sam W and Mitch M taking one over each. Mitch bowled one of their last pair in his first over and between the 3 of our bowlers we restricted Old Boys to 256 for 2. Kegworth bowled and fielded very well and very little got past the fielders who all played very well for us. Particular mention to George Kenning who let absolutely nothing past him all night, and demonstrated text book long barrier fielding through out the innings.

So, 257 needed to win, by no means an easy target.

We started very well with Sam Wildgust and Harry Lawson getting us to 218 for 0 after the first 4 overs. Harry batted with particular poise and authority for his 12 not out, a real captain's innings to get us off to a flyer. George Jones and Mitch Moseley then batted very sensibly to take us to 239 at the half way stage. This pair ran very well between the wicket to end up 3 and 6 not out respectively. This brought Owen and George Kenning to the wicket. Owen was unfortunate to be stumped off the 3rd ball he faced, but he made up for that by smacking a ball for 4 through mid wicket in the next over. Owen's boundary was struck so hard that the Old Boy's fielder jumped out of the way!! George played with a stoic straight bat in Boycottesque fashion to protect his wicket, and they both took us to 246 for 1 with 4 overs remaining.

This brought Sam Trickett and Mitch Williams to the wicket with 11 needed from 4 overs. Frustrated by some tight bowling, Mitch took a swing at a straight ball in the 2nd over and was clean bowled. Far from worrying the 2 batsmen, it seemed to inspire them and with 12 needed off the last 2 overs Mitch smashed the ball to all parts to get us over the line off the penultimate ball of the match.

So, a very enjoyable match against a good Old Boys team. Some real stand out performances from Harry Lawson, Sam Wildgust, Mitch Williams and Mitch Moseley. Also, George Jones was a very safe pair of hands behind the stumps, George Kenning batted with great resolve and fielded with some panache, and Sam Trickett weighed in with a wicket and 3 handy runs. So, I wish I was able to award 8 man of the match trophies!! There can be no denying that Harry with bat, ball and as captain, and the 2 Mitches with bat and ball all performed very well and made significant contributions to the victory. However, the award was given to a young man making his debut for us. Owen Hennessey bowled well, conceding only 1 run off the bat, fielded with style, and hit the shot of the match with his boundary. Congratulations to Owen, a brilliant start to his Kegworth career.

All in all, this was a perfomance that showed great maturity. We bowled and fielded with some style, and we batted with a great mix of restraint and power. If the team continues to perform to that standard they will enjoy a very successful summer.
