Loughborough Carillon v Kegworth Town Cricket Club Under 13's on Sun 20 May 2012 at 10.00am
Kegworth Town Cricket Club Won by 49 runs

Match report Another sensational performance by Kegworth, after a rocky start.

Kegworth won the toss and elected to bat first. We played on a huge ground where it was always going to be a struggle to reach the boundary, so clever cricket was required today to allow us to post a total.

Carillon's opening bowleres bowled incredibly well to see us 10 for 4 after 4 overs, though a few shots that our top 4 may wish to forget contributed to us being in this position.

We were then fortunate to see a superb innings building couple of partnerships that saw Sam Wildgust and Joe Hampson add 30 an dthen Sam and Guy Lorraine add a further 30+ runs, with Sam retiring on 25 from 35 balls and Joe and Guy scoring 8 and 2 respectively. After Sam retired, Will added a quick 4 off 6 balls to take us to a very competitive 84 for 6 at the close of our inning. What a fabulous recovery form 10 for 4, and a real captain's innings from Sam, ably backed up by Joe, Guy and Will.

When we bowled it was Appleby all over again (See U15B report from last week).

Will and Tom opened and bowled their full 4 overs each, with Will taking 2 or 9 and Tom very unlucky not to get a wicket in his 4 overs, with a stone dead LBW appeal being turned down. Tom did chip in with a direct hit that ran out their number 4, but not before Will had taken a catch off his own bowling and bowled their number 3. Will and Tom can be very proud of a very tight spell of bowling that saw Carillon on 16 for 3 after their 8 overs.

This brought Ant and Myles into the attack, with Ant striking with his 3rd ball, George Bakewell-Smith taking a very good instinctive catch at square leg.

Carillon were struggling to pierce our fielding circle, with everyone contributing in support of their team mates and with some incredibly sharp fielding. George Jones kep wicket brilliantly and conceded only one bye, which was commendable with Myles and Ant both turning the ball hugely. Myles took 2 wickets in his first over, an LBW and a caught and bowled. It was very encouraging to hear them appealing for LBWs and before long Ant was in on the act with another 2 wickets, bowling their number 7 and catching their number 8 LBW.

2 more wickets for Myles followed, including a great catch in the deep from Ant, and a breathtaking one handed leaping catch from Josh, leaving Carillon all out for 35 off 15.2 overs.

So, the Myles and Ant show rolled into Town again, and left with 7 wickets for 18 runs. This match was so much more than just Myles and Ant's bowling though. Without a fantastic innings from Sam, Joe, Guy and Will, Kegworth would never have posted a competitive target for them to bowl with. Will and Tom's contribution in the first 8 overs cannot be under estimated, they set the victory up with very tight bowling, restricting Carillon to 2 an over when they needed 4, and making them chase the game, which played perfectly into the hands of our 2 super spinners.

All in all though this was a superb team effort, where the lads never let their heads go down, and always believed they could win. We will play much tougher teams in the weeks ahead, and that will give us a far better chance to judge ourselves. For now though, we can all look back at a gritty batting performances and a breathtaking bowling and fielding performance.

Man of the match, for his inspiring captaincy and brilliantly judged knock to give us a competitive total, was Sam Wildgust. Well done Sam, richly deserved.
